Solid food

This is a bit of a repeat for those of you on facebook, but I wanted to include it here too. I was very excited to begin introducing solids and at Seb’s 4 month check-up, his doctor gave the go-ahead to start rice cereal. Sebastien, on the other hand, was not excited. He entertained the idea of rice cereal for a bite or two, then was… not pleased. The next couple tries didn’t end in tears, but he was not interested. I thought maybe it was the rice he didn’t like – it did look suspiciously like sand…

But it was the same with butternut squash and apples. (But they’re homemade! So much tastier than rice cereal! No thanks, mom.) It wasn’t so much that he hated them, he just wasn’t into it. He would take a small bite, make a face, spit it back out, then clam up until we took him out of his high chair. So after extensive blog and internet reading on starting solids, we decided to take a break and watch for signs that he is interested in what we’re eating. The consensus seems to be that this starts around 6-7 months, so we’ll wait a bit and try again!

In any case, here are the pictures from solids, round 1:

May

Ok, still in week one of June. Doing better this month, thanks to an earlier bedtime for the boy!

May was packed full of big things. Sebastien was baptized the first weekend in May, which he mostly slept through, except for a little yell when the cold water woke him up. The service was really nice, due to our awesome priest, and we followed it up with a family party at one of our favorite Boston restaurants, Gaslight. Grammie and Pop-pop spent a few days with us, going out to some nice meals, taking a long walk around the city and surviving the water main break that left us with undrinkable water for four days! We finished up our Next Steps class (with some play in the ball pit) and moved onto the next in the sequence, Caterpillars, taking four of our favorite new mom friends with us. We also started a weekly music class called Baby Wiggles with two of those same moms, Belle and Minna. We also met some great new moms in Caterpillars and had some lunches and picnics on the Esplanade with them. We went to Kelsey’s first birthday party, where Sebastien met some of the RI crew. Sebastien also met Amanda for the first time and went on a picnic with Shannon, Joe & Harper Ewer. We saw the documentary “Babies” – which was great – at the Coolidge Corner Theatre with Belle and Minna (and Avery and Elena). We went to brunch in Cambridge with Amanda and Josh, Ryan, Emily and Finn and celebrated Mother’s Day at Auntie Sha’s. (Seb’s gifts to me were a really nice pair of earrings and a LONNNNG nap on Papa’s chest!) We spent a really nice weekend down at Ra and Papa’s over Memorial Day and Sebastien got to meet Judy and Annie and see the rest of the Vuonos again. He also took his first trip to the beach, putting his toes in the ocean and the sand for the first time.

And the two biggest pieces of news: I officially told work I won’t be returning (which is a big relief) and we bought a condo! We put in an offer on the first day of our search, survived the inspection with no major issues and signed the P&S last week. It’s a two bedroom, 1400 sq ft place in Charlestown and we close on July 9th. We already have some friends who live around the block (with playmates for Sebastien) and there’s a great and very active mother’s association in the neighborhood, so we couldn’t be more excited.

Sebastien, about mid-month, you started trying to roll from your back to your front and spent a few weeks in deep frustration that you couldn’t get all the way over. Your “underneath” arm kept getting stuck and you would grunt and yell as you tried to flip onto your tummy. Finally, over Memorial Day weekend, you finally made it all the way over and now every time I set you flat on your back, you immediately roll over. The problem is that you’re not happy on your belly either and now grunt and yell in frustration that you can’t crawl! You also got much better at “tripod sitting” and can now hold yourself up for a few minutes before you fall over to one side (or straight down to your toes!) You became a lot more interested in all the things that hang off your floor gym and now pull on the rings and try to eat the legs on the animals. (You also really like the fish that light up and play music!) Sophie the giraffe and your o-ball are your current favorite toys. You like Sophie because you have been teething like crazy, chewing on anything you can get your hands on – your bink, your hands, other people’s hands, frozen washcloths, teething rings and Sophie. You’ve started to get especially fussy before bed so we have been giving you Hyland’s teething tablets which seem to calm you down and help you fall asleep easier. Speaking of falling asleep, around mid-month, we decided it was time for you to have an earlier bedtime. You had been going to sleep when we did (around 10 or 10:30pm, after your last feeding) but had started to take a nap around 7:30pm and sleep almost straight through, barely waking to eat and then going immediately back to bed. We figured that meant 7:30pm should really be your bedtime and it only took a few days of adjustment to get you used to the earlier time. Unfortunately, it means you’re no longer sleeping from 10pm to 5am, instead sleeping from 7pm to about 1am, then waking again at about 4am and 7am. But it is nice to have a few hours in the evening while you are asleep to fold laundry, clean up the house and… write blog posts! You’re still napping on the fly with no real schedule yet and you take most naps on me because you wake up every time I put you down, although I’ve been trying to get you used to sleeping in your cradle during the day – still a work in progress. You really like the songs we sing in Next Steps and Caterpillars, with your favorites being anything that have motions to them (wheels on the bus and itsy bitsy spider, in particular). I bought you a Sesame Street cd on iTunes which you listen to while I’m in the shower, along with the Baby Wiggles, Baby Einsten “Meet the Orchestra” and Kenny Loggins lullabyes cd’s. This, combined with our weekly classes, means I’m usually singing to you whenever you’re awake and stuck with silly kid songs in my head when you are asleep.

Now onto this month’s pictures…
